Instead of mounting an independent bid for governor that he is sure would fail, Sioux City Republican Bob Vander Plaats will focus his efforts this fall on convincing Iowans the three Iowa Supreme Court Justices up for a retention vote on the Nov. 2 ballot should be kicked off the bench.

Nicki Thorn and Tracy Barbatti didn't know what to expect when they entered the Black Hawk County Courthouse on April 30, 2009. In the wake of the Iowa Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage, several of the county's judges and magistrates stopped performing civil ceremonies to avoid marrying gays and lesbians.

Two Iowa legislators are getting heat from the gay community. The lawmakers want to remove protection to lesbians, gay and transgender students from the Safe Schools Law, in and effort to reverse the Iowa's Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

A majority of Iowans think the issue of gay marriage doesn't deserve lawmakers' limited time. Among six hot-button topics, a new Iowa Poll shows a majority of Iowans consider only a ban on text messaging while driving worth the Legislature's time during a session shortened by 20 days to cut costs.

He was concerned with how the other students would react and what safety measures he would have to put in place to protect his only openly gay student.
